The sheer scale of Vienna’s natural gas distribution network is impressive. Currently, it stretches over 3,469 km, 495 km of which are high pressure mains pipelines and 2,974 km of which are low pressure mains.

Wien Energie Gasnetz has one of the most modern gas regulations systems in Europe. Computers permanently monitor the mains services, collecting data on the flow of gas in the network and then automatically calculating the optimum flow. In addition to this, regular and extensive checks serve to guarantee maximum security of supply.

In 2001, the natural gas dispatcher unit in Simmering entered operation. The two large-scale regulation stations at Leopoldau and Simmering act as centres which feed gas into the grid and distribute it accordingly. The gas dispatcher monitors and regulates centrally, with the remaining processes being carried out automatically. Similarly, a decision on switching and how it should be carried out can be made virtually simultaneously by means of a mains simulation.

The pressure regulators include two large-scale regulation stations, 15 reducer stations, 179 local regulation systems and 22 major customer systems.

Gas pressure regulator systems

Wien Energie offers business customers the opportunity to benefit from a specially tailored gas pressure regulation system to make best possible use of energy. These easy-to-maintain and extremely service-friendly regulator systems control and monitor the flow of natural gas, while the size of the company control system depends on the needs of the customer concerned.

These regulators can be used in a variety of different situations. Bakers make use of a regulator system to run ovens. At General Motors, engine gearboxes are hardened using a gas pressure regulator, while Vienna’s General Hospital (AKH) employs one to sterilise surgical instruments.

Improved connectivity in the high-pressure gas grid

After a period of two years, the project to implement a 4-bar high-pressure network structure was successfully completed during this business year, making it possible to improve connectivity in the high-pressure gas grid, providing additional security of supply and reliability to network operations.
