Local heating

Wien Energie’s local heating network is currently 63.6 km in length. The local heating system is divided into two types of networks: a communal heating network of over 1 km in length supplied with heat by a biomass power plant, and a local heating network of under 1 km in length which uses local heating centres as a source of heat.

In 2008, several projects were implemented, including the 13 km-long organic communal heating network in Seefeld, Tyrol, set up by Wien Energie’s subsidiary, Energiecomfort. This network enables the community to save around four million litres of heating oil and 7,200 tonnes of CO2 per year.

Similarly, 6,500 tonnes of CO2 per year are being saved thanks to the 9.5 km-long organic communal heating network in Oberstaufen, Bavaria, which entered operation in late autumn 2008.
