Telecommunications

Wien Energie operates sizable telecommunication networks based on all conventional technologies. The fibre optic network is around 1,200 km in length and, with more than 2,000 km of empty cable housing in place, is the largest in Vienna, supplying major customers. Citynet, for example, connects around 150 sites owned by the City of Vienna such as district council offices and hospitals. The Wiener Wirtschaftsnetz is a network available to business customers. The Wiener Bildungsnetz, a similar network serving over 450 schools and educational facilities.

In the field of telecommunications, the Wien Energie subsidiary Wien Energie Wienstrom offers an innovative product: Vienna’s extra broadband network, one of the most modern and fastest broadband fibre optic networks in Europe, marketed as blizznet.

By 2009, a total of around 50,000 households should have the option of connecting to the broadband network, allowing customers to achieve upload and download speeds of up to 100 megabits per second (780 times faster than ISDN and 16 times faster than ADSL).

Wien Energie Wienstrom acts as the network operator and is available to all service providers. This means that Wien Energie lays a fibre optic cable from the core network to the customer’s house or apartment and also installs a so-called blizznet Box that acts as a form of modem. The providers can then deliver their various services such as internet, telephony, TV, video on demand or video surveillance, while leaving the customer free to choose the most favourable provider for each service he or she requires.

Moreover, there are no connection fees for existing Wien Energie Wienstrom customers; they simply have to pay the charges levied by their chosen provider.

Cooperations with six service providers have already been signed, namely with Telekom Austria, Neotel, TeleTronic, quipcom, it&tel and conova; and the list is set to grow.
