When the weather turns cold, and demand for heating rockets, energy produced from thermal waste treatment plants and from waste heat generated from electricity production no longer suffices. In order to meet the increased demand for heating, peak load boilers are called upon at the Arsenal, Leopoldau, Kagran, Spittelau and Inzersdorf sites. These bivalent boilers are equipped to burn natural gas and heating oil.
Wien Energie always tries to make full use of waste heat, dramatically reducing the need to resort to peak load boilers. Currently, they are responsible for producing only around 4% of the required district heating.
Installing district heating storage tanks represents another approach. Wien Energie plans to construct two district heating storage heating tanks with a total output of around 170 MW and a capacity of around 500 MW. Such storage tanks make it possible to store excess heating and use it at times when it is actually needed, minimising further the use of peak load boilers.
