Using special synergies

After six months of construction, the innovative organic communal heating network in the market town of Trumau entered operation in October 2007. Constructed directly next to the sewage treatment plant, the heat generated in the biomass plant is not only used to provide heating and hot water to the population via the communal heating network, but also to remove moisture from the sewage sludge. This process reduces the amount of water in sewage sludge from 70 to 20%, corresponding to around 1,000 tonnes of evaporated water each year. This translates into lower disposal costs. The environment also benefits from this process, as the sewage sludge is dried in a CO2 neutral way, meaning that the organic communal heating network at Trumau saves a total of 1,700 tonnes of CO2 per year.
