EconGas has been operational since January 2003 and is a joint venture between BEGAS, EVN, Linz AG, OMV Gas, OÖ Ferngas AG and Wien Energie (15.7%) in order to pool their many years of international experience and comprehensive know-how to achieve dimensions relevant at the international level. Its core business is providing natural gas to local distributors and customers in Europe with an annual consumption of at least 500,000 cubic metres, as well as trading natural gas on international markets.
The primary indicator of electricity and natural gas purchase price developments in Europe is North Sea Brent. Since January 2007, the price of crude oil has risen by around 148%, peaking at USD 144 a barrel in July 2008. The price of natural gas generally follows developments in the oil price after a time lag or around six months. The thermal power stations operated by Wien Energie are fired mainly with natural gas.
