Wien Energie GmbH is a wholly owned subsidiary of Wiener Stadtwerke Holding AG and, as such, is indirectly owned by the City of Vienna. The interests of the shareholder are represented by the Supervisory Board. Wien Energie is also subject to auditing by the Group Auditing Department, the Audit Division of the City of Vienna, as well as the Board of Audit.
As the largest domestic regional energy provider, Wien Energie is responsible for supplying a total of two million people in and around Vienna with electricity, gas and heating on a daily basis. The range of services we offer, however, extends well beyond simply supplying energy. The Group is also involved in waste recycling, facility management, telecommunications, energy efficiency, energy advice and energy services.
The Wien Energie Group consists of six business divisions:

Wien Energie Wienstrom owns all our electricity generating facilities and also manages the Group’s telecommunication activities. This subsidiary operates thermal power stations in the districts of Simmering, Donaustadt and Leopoldau, which also produce district heating thanks to the use of combined heat and power (CHP) technology. Moreover, Wienstrom has hydroelectric power stations in the Lower Austrian towns of Opponitz and Gaming, as well as energy supply rights to the Freudenau and Greifenstein power stations.
Since the autumn of 2006, Wien Energie Wienstrom has been jointly operating Europe’s largest forest biomass power plant, in Vienna’s Simmering district, together with Wien Energie Fernwärme and Österreichische Bundesforste AG, the federal forests management company.
With a network of around 1,200 km fibre optic cables, Wien Energie Wienstrom also offers state-of-the-art telecommunications infrastructure. District council offices, Viennese schools, hospitals and institutes at a further 150 or so locations around Vienna take advantage of this service.
