An increasing amount of energy is needed as Vienna and the surrounding metropolitan area grow year after year. Over the past ten years, demand has increased by around 25%.
Over a million private households, 230,000 businesses and industrial plants, and 4,500 farms in Vienna and the adjacent areas of Lower Austria and Burgenland rely upon being supplied with electricity, gas and heating on a daily basis – in a safe, environmentally friendly and customer-friendly way. They all put their faith in Wien Energie, Austria’s largest energy provider.
With this trust comes an enormous amount of responsibility. What’s more, it motivates us to give our very best, day in, day out, because we know that the economical and environmental future – and, by extension, the well-being and quality of life enjoyed by two million people – of the Greater Vienna metropolitan area depends on how responsibly energy is handled.
How is Wien Energie rising to this challenge? With ecological growth. Wien Energie is investing concertedly in improving the efficiency of its own power stations and in expanding district heating services. At the same time, the company is redoubling its efforts to cultivate more sources of renewable energy.
Through a combination of its own power generation facilities, existing power purchasing rights and renewable energy sources, Wien Energie currently meets around 50% of the electricity requirements of the Greater Vienna metropolitan area. Building on this, its objective is to further increase the amount of power its generates with a view to covering the increasing demand for energy and to reducing dependence on imported electricity.
The Repowering Simmering 1/2 project will result in one of the most efficient and environmentally friendly power stations in Europe. Amount of investment: approx. EUR 300 million.
Simmering 1 is being revamped and turned into a state-of-the-art steam turbine plant (combined gas and steam turbine generating plant), capable of producing 700 megawatts of electricity and 450 megawatts of district heating. This means that Wien Energie will produce around 75% of its own energy requirements.
The 30-year old gas turbine plant (Simmering 2) will be fully modernised and serve as a backup, while also helping to cover periods of peak demand. Its maximum output amounts to 60 megawatts of electricity and 150 megawatts of thermal energy.
